veda, i met her my last semester living in iowa city. it'd been a long while since i had a proper ghost friend. veda had an abortion behind her, a notebook filled entirely with words she found pleasing; maybe she'd flirted with alcholism, but couldn't commit even to that. we'd walk out behind currier and sit by the river. she'd tell me stories about people i didn't talk to anymore and the baby she'd wished she could keep. i bought a bottle of walker's in her honor and kept it in the nook below my desk? i barely drank any of it myself. before my parents came to the room to reassign me to a bed in their hotel, there that last naked hour in the room i'd called home for near a year, i sat down on the university issued chair by the sink and poured veda's booze down the drain.

so here is one of veda's memories, submitted for your approval. perhaps we'll be hearing from her again, sometime soon.
